In honor of our tomato festival, here are some fun facts about  one of our favorite summer treats!

1) The tomato is considered both a fruit & a vegetable. Nutritionally & culinary it's a vegetable but botanically it's a fruit!

2) You shouldn't store tomatoes in the refrigerator, as it causes them to get mealy & lose their flavor. Tomatoes should be left on the counter at room temperature.

3) Tomatoes contain the antioxidant lycopene which acts like sunscreen from the inside out and helps our bodies fight off skin damage from UV rays!

4) It's best to store tomatoes stem side down, this helps to extend their shelf life & retain their moisture.

5) When you're cutting tomatoes it's best to use a serrated knife, this makes nice, neat slices and helps to prevent from squeezing all the juice out.

6) Tomatoes are high in vitamin A, C, fiber & are cholesterol free!

7) The average sized tomato (5 oz) only contains about 35 calories.

8) 93% of all American backyard gardens contain tomatoes which makes it the most popular hobby vegetable.
