Top Pic - Feast on Fifth ~ Bottom Pic - Bison Lodge Adventure in Kingsville, MO
While many of you have been busy preparing for the kids going back to school, we have been busy getting out in the community.
Two weeks ago, John attended Kat James' Bison Lodge Total Transformation five day course with several USWM customers. Two plus weeks on the program and John is shrinking. He is down 15 lbs and has flipped his leptin switch on, and turned his ghrelin switch off which has cut food intake 50% while increasing smart fat intake dramatically. All of these changes without an exercise regime. All members pictured have similar gains in health. Kat's next small audience gathering will be November 10-15 in a historic Manhattan mansion.
Last weekend we joined several local farmers and restaurants as a sponsor of the Feast on Fifth event in Quincy, IL. This community dinner fundraiser celebrating local agriculture and restaurants was a fantastic event. Among other dishes, guests got to feast on one of our summer favorites USWM Beef Short Ribs. Two hundred seats were sold out well in advance for this unique street dinner directly across from the spot where Lincoln and Douglas held their famous debate in 1858!
It is hard to believe that summer is winding down, and Labor Day is right around the corner! To help you stock up on grilling essentials for the long weekend, some of our favorites are on sale this week. Beef Ribeyes are always a hit, and the very popular Lamb Rib Chops are a great beef alternative. If you want to try something new on the grill, choose the Sugar Free Italian Beef Sausage Links which contain no sweeteners, nitrates, or MSG.
Eating low glycemic foods continues to be a topic with growing interest. In her article this week, Kelley shares how to enjoy the occasional dessert or bread product, while still limiting the glycemic impact. Dr. Al Searswrites about why we should model our modern day nutrition plans on our ancestor's diets which had a naturally low glycemic impact.
Be sure to find the 15% off red letter discount code from Dr. Sears' article to save some money on your Labor Day grilling essentials! Retrieve the discount code from the article, then add your favorite items to your cart and enjoy a store wide 15% discount. (Code expires this Tuesday at midnight CST; see full exclusions below).
Even though the heat of Summer is still with us, thoughts of Fall are not far behind with kids going back to school. Our Recipe Corner this week features a very fall-like recipe which calls for Beef Stew meat which is on sale this week!
Fats used to get a bad rap... but we now know the health and food industries were wrong about fats. We know that fats are an important part of our diets. And that it's carbs - and NOT fats - that are responsible for chronic diseases and America's obesity epidemic.
Most people are catching on... you know carbs are making you fat and sick. But you're only getting half the story... because you're still being told it's OK to eat certain kinds of carbs, as long as they're low on the glycemic index...
Few of us have the willpower to resist a freshly-baked dessert.
Homemade chocolate chip cookies... brownies... cinnamon apple pie... The very smell of these nostalgic sweet comfort foods is practically intoxicating. Their gooey goodness can be nearly impossible to pass up.
Unfortunately, most of us go through life indulging, only to suffer from post-dessert guilt, sugar-induced sluggishness and a variety of unhealthy consequences. Or we muster our willpower and deprive ourselves for the sake of our health and waistline.
But there is good news for dessert lovers who care about their health...
"Not too many things feel quite as fall-like as the appearance of butternut squash at the market. Here I use it to give heartiness and texture to a beef stew, adding a little pear for sweetness and some cinnamon and thyme for flavor. It is hard not to make a lot of this considering the size of an average butternut squash is quite large - I like to freeze the leftovers for those days that I don't want to (or feel well enough to) cook. This recipe makes a pot full, so don't be afraid to halve it if you don't want so much at once."

Fifteen years of managed grazing results in excellent forage growth and diversity. You can barely see the cattle in the tall forage. On the right is Eastern Gamma grass which is a native prairie grass, and dominant before the early Missouri settlers arrived with cattle in the 1830's
