Dear LocalHarvest Customer,
Here's a short lemon-and-avocado primer for everyone. Some of you may already know, but we have wonderful fresh citrus offered through the LocalHarvest store. We've also got two delicious varieties of avocado in season.
Did you know that Meyer lemons are a cross between a lemon and an orange or tangerine? They have a slightly sweeter, more fragrant flavor than a true lemon. Meyers are a great choice for lemon salsas, stuffing in roast chicken, grated for the zest, and in cakes and other recipes where you favor sweet over tart.
Eureka lemons are extra juicy: perfect for making lemonade, marinades, and in cooking and baking that calls for lemony flavor, like homemade lemon bars. They have all the taste characteristics you'd expect of a true lemon: tart, juicy, and slightly acidic.
Now, for the guacamole. Fuerte avocados are usually available from late winter through March, so now is the time to get them before they're gone. Fuertes have a light, buttery flesh and smooth, easy-to-peel skin. Hass avocados are rich and creamy, with a slightly higher oil content. Both are excellent for guacamole and the much-loved toast with avocado, salt and pepper.
As always, this beautiful fruit is offered by small farmers dedicated to producing delicious foods with care.
