Our Squash As part of the Three Sisters, we decided to use a native squash that is known for it's immense size and large leaves.
It's an heirloom native to North Georgia called Candy Roaster Squash. It can easily weigh 10 pounds! That's a whole lot of squash!
The Candy Roaster was originally cultivated by the Cherokee Indians. Now it is a rare seed because it can cross-pollinate leaving seeds to be hybrid. It takes great care to prevent this from happening as it must be isolated from any other types of squash.
Cucumber, Sweet Cucumber, what are you?
Well, it depends on who you ask...
In the botanical world, it's a fruit because it developed from a flowering plant and contains seeds.
But if you ask a chef, you will be told a vegetable. Why? A chef considers the taste of the food. Therefore, a cucumber has a lower sugar content and lacks that sweeter taste. Hence, to the culinary world it's a vegetable.
Bell peppers and tomatoes are botanically fruit but considered vegetables in the culinary world.
In 1893, it was ruled that imported tomatoes should be taxed as vegetable.
We are looking forward to another great school year at Alegre Farm. We offer hands-on field trips where preschool, elementary, middle, and high school students learn about farm life.
We are seeking teachers to guide students through interactive learning stations in our gardens and with our animals. Teaching and farm experience is helpful, but not required. Please contact our Education Director, Angie Mallard, for more information.
